A. Course Objectives

a) To provide modern up-to-date knowledge on digital cartography, digitizers, scanners, workstations, and available software.

b) To introduce digital cartographic visualization and presentation.

c) To introduce digital and web cartographic visualization and presentation.

d) To train to produce digital and web cartographic data as an information system.

4. Computational Cartography (5hrs)

5. Visualization of Geographic Information (3hrs)

  • 5.1 Theory of cartographic Visualization
  • 5.2 Colour
  • 5.3 Design of paper, digital, and mobile maps

6. Web and Desktop Mapping (10hrs)

  • 6.1 Implementation of maps for Internet
  • 6.2 Metadata
  • 6.3 Types of webs

7. Topographic Map (10hrs)

  • 7.1 Presentation of topography
  • 7.2 Multi-scale presentation
  • 7.3 Geomorphology in mapping
  • 7.4 Soil maps
  • 7.5 Nautical charts / Atlases

8. Development of Cartographic Information System (2hrs)

  • A project work on designing and implementation of a cartographic information system

Exercise (15hrs)

  • Scanning, digitization, vectorization of sheets, preparation, and design of digital topographic maps and thematic atlases.
  • Preparation and design of web/internet topographic maps and thematic atlases.
